Proper feeding and the correct dog exercises will contribute to a long and healthy life for your pet. Owning and looking after a dog is a huge responsibility and one that should not be taken lightly, caring for the animal’s well being is a large part of that responsibility. Exercises for a dog need to be suitable for the breed, for example it would be unreasonable to expect a Yorkshire terrier and a Great Dane to be able to achieve the same type of exercise.
One of the main ways for dogs to maintain their muscle tone and to keep joints, bones and mind healthy is to exercise, not only is it good for the dog it can also benefit the owner.
Obviously some types of dog are more active and require more exercise, so before owning a dog consideration should be given to the amount of time that will be available for exercise. Dog exercises can be fun and rewarding for both parties.
Some of the popular dog exercises are
Fetch
This normally involves throwing an object such as a ball or a stick and the dog retrieving it and bringing it back to you, this is good exercise for the dog and can enhance obedience training. This game can be played in the garden or the park or even using a safe water area as swimming is also beneficial and fun for the dog.
Tug
A simple game where you and the dog pull and tug with a suitable toy, it can be played anywhere and doesn’t need a big space.
Jogging
A dog can be a good companion whilst you are jogging, a great benefit for the dog as long as it is of a suitable distance for the dog. As well as jogging it is possible for a dog to accompany its owner whilst they are cycling, but the animal would need to be trained properly before attempting this task to ensure that no harm came to the pet.
Games can be played out in whatever fashion suits the dog as long as it is not detrimental to the animals well being. The right diet, regular check ups with the vet and good dog exercises all coupled together will surely prolong the life of your pet and your enjoyment of your time together. Look after the dog and you will reap the rewards.
